Lake Tahoe maternity photography offers cool pine-scented air, towering forest trails and soft natural light that flatters without effort. If you're expecting and drawn to the idea of marking this season somewhere quieter and more beautiful than a packed lakefront or roadside vista point, this is it.
I photograph maternity sessions throughout the Lake Tahoe region year-round, for Reno locals looking for a change of scenery and for families visiting from the Bay Area, Southern California and beyond. If you're expecting and wondering whether a Lake Tahoe session makes sense for you — it likely does, and it's simpler to arrange than you might think.
Lake Tahoe Forest Maternity Sessions
The forest is where Lake Tahoe maternity sessions come alive. Towering pines, granite boulders and soft dappled light that moves gently through the trees — it's a setting that does a lot of the work for you. The background fades naturally, giving photographs a depth and stillness that open lakefront settings rarely have. It's also cooler, shaded and easier to move through, which matters when you're 30-plus weeks along.
We work with a handful of tucked-away forest locations around South Lake Tahoe, the North Shore, Truckee and Incline Village — spots that are peaceful, textured and beautifully lit at any time of day. Sessions typically begin in early evening when the light is warmest and the trails are quieter.
For most clients, the forest isn't the setting they initially imagined. It's just the one they can't stop talking about afterward.
Madelyn and Charles — South Lake Tahoe Maternity Session
Madelyn and Charles were vacationing with family in July when we met for their maternity session — a shaded woodland setting in South Lake Tahoe, just the two of them and about an hour in the trees.
Madelyn wore a pale blue fitted knit dress with delicate buttons down the front — simple, graceful and perfectly suited to the forest palette. The fitted silhouette highlighted her bump beautifully, which is always worth thinking about when choosing your outfit. Loose cuts can be lovely, but when a dress is loose all over the bump can disappear into the fabric — and the bump is the whole point.
Charles wore a soft polo and tan trousers that complemented her look without competing with it. Together their tones sat naturally within the greens and earth tones around them — understated, coordinated and quietly refined.
What came out of that hour was a set of images that felt genuinely like them. Unhurried. Real. A moment of quiet joy in the middle of a family trip, with the baby already part of the story.
What to Wear for a Lake Tahoe Outdoor Maternity Session
The forest does a lot of the styling work for you — as long as you dress with it rather than against it. A few guidelines that work in every season:
Reach for soft, natural fabrics that breathe well — linen, cotton, soft knits. Pastels, neutrals and earth tones sit naturally within the Tahoe landscape. Choose fitted or softly draped silhouettes that highlight the bump rather than conceal it. Comfortable shoes for walking short distances on forest trails.
For partners: coordinate rather than match. A quieter version of her tone — tan, warm grey or white — works in almost every palette. Long trousers photograph significantly better than shorts.
If you're unsure, reach out before the session. I'm happy to look at what you're considering and give an honest opinion.

I'll send location options, outfit guidance and timing recommendations to make sure the session fits easily into your trip.

Why Tahoe Forest Sessions Work So Well
There’s a quietness in the trees that seems to settle everything. The light shines through the trees and the background fades in the best possible way. It gives space for connection—between two people, and with the moment itself.
Some of the most genuine images come from that kind of setting. No props, no fuss—just the way a hand rests on a belly, or the quiet smile that says everything without needing to pose it. Those are the moments I always look for. If you're expecting and considering a session in the Lake Tahoe area, I'd love to hear from you. Reach out to talk through timing, location and what the experience looks like from start to finish.
