The Ultimate Guide to Lake Tahoe Engagement Photo Locations
- Engagement Photo Session
I'm Ruta Swanson, an engagement and wedding photographer working across Lake Tahoe, the Sierra Nevadas and Northern California. Engagement sessions with me are relaxed, guided when needed, and focused on keeping things natural so you can just enjoy being together. We choose a location that fits you and follow the light instead of rushing the clock. The result is a set of images that feel natural, romantic and true to how the two of you are together.
Most couples arrive a little unsure of how to be in front of a camera, and that usually sorts itself out within the first few minutes. We meet at the location and let the session unfold from there. There's no rigid shot list or stiff posing, but I'll guide you throughout so you always know what to do and look your best on camera. By the end, you've forgotten the camera is even there. And if you have a dog, they're always welcome to come along. I love when couples bring their pets, they're part of your story too, and the photos always feel a little more like you because of it.
Lake Tahoe has more variety per square mile than almost anywhere I've worked. Sand Harbor gives you turquoise water and granite boulders with a warm late-afternoon light that doesn't need much help. Chimney Beach is quieter, more private, and just as beautiful without the permit logistics. Emerald Bay is dramatic in any season. Van Sickle Bi-State Park sits right on the California-Nevada line and has forested trails that open into panoramic lake views — ideal if you want something that doesn't look like every other Tahoe session.
If you have a place that you love — a family ranch, a boat on the lake, somewhere you've been going for years — we can build the session around it. Those tend to make the most personal and original images.
You'll receive a curated, fully edited gallery of high resolution images, delivered through a private online gallery within a week of your session. Every image is edited for color, light and tone. Nothing over processed or over stylized. Your images will look timeless, because trends fade but well made photographs don't.
You'll have full printing rights and a simple download process. You're welcome to use these images for save-the-dates, invitations and your wedding website.
For couples based in Reno or who prefer a more urban setting, downtown Reno and the Truckee River corridor are genuinely underused and photograph beautifully, especially in the early evening. But if you want to stick to nature, there are plenty of parks and trails we can go to. Rancho San Rafael, Mayberry Park and Galena forest is a few of my favorites.
Reno has more to offer than most people realize. The Truckee River Walk, rooftop garages, foothill forest can give you clean backgrounds, interesting light and easy logistics. If you want something that feels local and personal rather than destination-driven, this is a good option too.
For couples who want to explore, there's a lot beyond the obvious. Moon Rocks, Sand Mountain and the Washoe Dunes are worth the drive — those are certainly unique locations that have it's own character and charm.
How many photos will we receive from my engagement session?
Can we bring our dog to the session?
Do We need a permit for engagement photos at Lake Tahoe?
It depends on the session and the light, but most two-hour sessions produce between 100-150 finished images. I'd rather deliver fewer images that are all genuinely strong than pad the gallery with frames that don't hold up.
Yes, well behaved dogs are very welcome! However, keep in mind that some places do not allow dogs, so we will have to plan your session around that.
Some locations require a photography permit — Sand Harbor and Emerald Bay are the main ones. The permit is $50 and takes about a month to obtain. I take care of it. You don't need to track it down or follow up. Just let me know which location you're leaning toward early in our planning conversation and I'll handle the rest.
