When Angel and Michael couldn't choose between a downtown Reno session and a sailboat on Lake Tahoe, they booked both. This is the second half. And it's a different world entirely. There are a lot of ways to do an engagement session at Lake Tahoe. Beaches, forests, granite boulders — all of them beautiful. But there is something about being out on the water that changes everything. The shore falls away, the mountains appear from angles you never see from land and suddenly it's just the two of you and the lake and the sky.
We met at the dock on a warm early evening, the four of us — Angel, Michael the captain of the sailboat and me with my camera. The boat pushed off and within minutes we were out on the water, sailing along the South Shore toward Emerald Bay. Angel and Michael were excited from the moment they stepped on board. The kind of excited that's contagious. Whatever the city session was, this was something else.
A Lake Tahoe Sailboat Engagement Session
Lake Tahoe from the water is a completely different experience than Lake Tahoe from the shore. The clarity of the water at this elevation is extraordinary — deep blue in the middle, turquoise closer to the shallows and crystal clear all the way through. Add the Sierra Nevada rising in every direction and the light moving across the surface as the evening settles in and you have a setting that does most of the work for you.
For couples planning a Lake Tahoe wedding, a sailboat engagement session is one of the most distinctive things you can do — and one of the most memorable. The photographs look like nothing else. And the experience of being out there together, away from everything, is something couples talk about long after the session is over.
Sailing Toward Emerald Bay
We sailed along the South Shore toward Emerald Bay as the early evening light settled across the water. If you know Tahoe, you know what that light does — it turns the lake a deeper shade of blue, softens the mountains behind it and wraps everything in a warmth that's genuinely hard to describe.
I was taking pictures throughout this adventure, noticing the way Angel leaned into Michael when the boat picked up speed. The way they laughed at something only they understood. The way two people look when they are completely happy and completely present.
That's what a Lake Tahoe sailboat engagement session gives you that no beach or forest can. There's nowhere to go. It's just the two of you, the water and whatever happens next.
Planning a Sailboat Engagement Session at Lake Tahoe
If you're thinking about a sailboat session at Lake Tahoe, here's what's worth knowing.
Charter companies:
Several companies operate on the lake and offer private charters that work beautifully for photography sessions. Some offer a sailing lesson experience — but like Angel and Michael, most couples just want to be on the water. A private charter gives you the boat, the captain and the freedom to sail where the light is best. Sailboat charters on Lake Tahoe typically operate from May through October.
Timing:
Early evening is ideal. The light is softer and more directional than midday. The lake tends to be calmer and the South Shore toward Emerald Bay is at its most beautiful as the day winds down. Midday light on open water can be very bright and harsh — evening is always the better choice for photography.
What to wear:
Angel wore a white cropped dress, and Michael opted for a white linen shirt and linen pants. Note that pants always look better than shorts for guys on engagement sessions. It brings a bit more of a special occasion feeling. Flowing fabrics work beautifully on the water as well — they move with the breeze and photograph with a natural elegance. Stick to whites, soft blues, warm creams and neutrals that complement the lake rather than compete with it. Avoid very dark colors which can feel heavy against the brightness of the water. And leave the heels at the dock, comfort shoes are essential in the sailboat.
