When Angel and Michael couldn't choose between downtown Reno and a sailboat on Lake Tahoe, they made the only logical decision — they booked both. We started in Reno on a warm early evening and honestly, with these two, it didn't matter where we were. They were so easy and happy together that the location was almost beside the point. Almost.

This is the first half of their double session. Part two takes them out on the water at Lake Tahoe — and if this one is any indication, that post is going to be something. But today it's all about downtown Reno and two people who made the city look very, very good.

Downtown Reno Rooftop Engagement Session

One of my favorite locations for Reno engagement photography is a rooftop with sweeping views across the city toward the Sierra Nevada. It's not a spot I share publicly — partly to keep it uncrowded and partly because arriving there for the first time is its own experience. What it offers is hard to replicate anywhere else in the city. Clean open light, space to move and a skyline that gives photographs a quiet cinematic quality that no park or trailhead can match. For couples who want something polished and personal without feeling staged, this is consistently one of the strongest locations I shoot in Reno.

Angel and Michael were completely natural up there. The city spread out behind them, the light moved and for about an hour it was just the two of them — relaxed, present and completely themselves. Exactly what an engagement session should be.

The Other Side of Reno

There's a version of Reno that doesn't get photographed enough. Not the casinos, not the arch — but the Riverwalk District, the textured walls of Midtown, the wide open rooftops with views that stretch toward the Sierra Nevada. Downtown Reno Nevada has real visual character when you know where to look. Midtown in particular photographs beautifully — weathered brick, wide sidewalks and the kind of quiet street energy that gives portraits depth without distraction. The Truckee River runs through the heart of downtown and the light along the Riverwalk in early evening is soft, warm and endlessly workable. It's a city that rewards photographers who take the time to find its quieter corners.

In the early evening the whole place transforms. The light drops toward the mountains, the streets quiet down and downtown Reno takes on a warmth that's easy to miss if you've only ever seen it in the middle of the day. For portrait work it's one of the most underrated settings — varied, textured and genuinely beautiful when the timing is right. Downtown Reno engagement sessions work beautifully in every season for exactly this reason. For couples planning a Lake Tahoe wedding, a downtown Reno engagement session also gives you a second visual world to work with — urban and open, architectural and natural, two completely different moods from one relationship. The contrast is worth having.

The Riverwalk and Downtown Streets

We started by the Truckee River, moving through the quieter streets near the Riverwalk District at an easy pace. No rush, no forced moments — just Angel and Michael doing what they do naturally while I stayed close and watched for what was worth keeping.

What came through almost immediately was how at ease they are together. There's a particular kind of comfort that only exists between two people who genuinely like each other — not just in love but actually at home in each other's company. It showed up in the small things. The way they leaned in without thinking about it. The way a conversation would break into laughter mid-frame. Those are the moments a downtown Reno engagement session is built for — real and unhurried, with a city that stays quietly in the background.

Planning an Engagement Session In Reno?

Downtown Reno has more to offer than most couples realize. Beyond the obvious spots there are rooftops, riverwalks, Midtown walls and quiet streets that photograph beautifully in any season. If you're not sure where to start, that's exactly what the planning conversation is for — I have plenty of locations to suggest and we'll find the right fit for you.
