A Great Headshot Isn’t Luck - It Starts with the Right Mindset
Confidence isn’t just something that magically appears when the camera clicks - it starts long before you step in front of the lens. A good start is half the battle, and that includes how you feel about the session. If you come in dreading the process, that tension will show in your photos. But if you shift your mindset and approach your headshot session as an opportunity - not a chore - you’re already on the path to a great result.

Wardrobe
Wardrobe plays an essential role in any kind of photo session, but it is extremely important when we are planning professional headshots. That's where we have to thoroughly think things through and choose clothes wisely. When people think of a professional headshot fitted jackets and suits come to mind first, but business dress code has evolved over the years and has become more relaxed and casual. There are no right or wrong answers when it comes down to style; it is all about personal preference and business that you are in. To help you determine which direction you may want your wardrobe to take you, here are some questions to ask yourself:
What is the level of formality that my industry dictates?
How relatable do I wish to look?
What mood am I trying to evoke? Bright and cheerful, neutral or serious? ( think light colors for happy and neutral, darker tones for serious)
Is this how I look most of the days at my job?
Would someone in my industry choose what I chose to wear?
- Have a few options for clothing and remember, layering is your best friend! This is the fastest way to change up the look with minimal effort. Cardigans, jackets and scarves work great for this.
- Make sure your nails look neat. This may be a perfect time to pamper yourself and get a manicure. And yes! This applies to guys as well!
Most imporant tip of all- Wear Clothes That Make You Feel Like Yourself
Your headshot should reflect who you are—both professionally and personally. The right outfit isn’t just about looking polished; it’s about feeling comfortable and confident. If you wouldn’t normally wear a suit, forcing yourself into one might make you feel stiff or unnatural. Likewise, if structured, professional attire is part of your everyday style, lean into that.
Think about what you’d wear if you were meeting an important client or attending a networking event where you wanted to make a strong impression. Choose clothing that aligns with your industry and personal brand while still feeling authentic to you.
When you feel comfortable in what you’re wearing, that ease translates into natural, confident body language—leading to a stronger, more engaging headshot. If an outfit makes you feel awkward or out of character, that discomfort will likely show in the photos.
A good rule of thumb: If you wouldn’t normally wear it, don’t force it just for your headshot. Confidence and authenticity always make the best impression.
Other tips
- Avoid sleeveless tops. For most people the uncovered armpit area looks unflattering. This is mostly for ladies. We haven't had a guy with sleveless shirt come in for headshots yet 🤣 .
- Make sure your jacket and shirt fit you well and are pressed. While it is possible to take out wrinkles in Photoshop, this does take a lot of time and will incur an extra charge if requested.
- Avoid very tight, busy patterns and stripes. They don't look good on digital files. (gives a weird artifact called moirè)
- It is best to wear neutral, calm colors. This brings attention to your face rather than your clothing.
- If you decide to wear jewelry, opt for simpler pieces. It is a nice touch and can bring some of your personality to your portrait without overpowering it.
WHAT TO BRING to your headshot session
- Please bring your head, a comb (if you have hair), a good attitude and a friendly smile :)
