A Stylish Fall Family Session at Caughlin Ranch
Caughlin Ranch in Reno, with its golden fall leaves and tranquil paths, sets the perfect stage for a family photo session. Recently, I had the pleasure of capturing a lovely family of seven - five daughters, including twin girls just under two years old. The busy mom chose black dresses for everyone (except the dad, of course) , and it was a fantastic choice! The dad wore a black top with jeans, adding a bit of casual style to the family’s look.
Mixing Denim and Black: A Perfect Combo
While this family opted for all black, I can easily imagine how mixing some denim into their outfits would have looked equally amazing. Picture some family members in jeans, others in a cute jean dress, paired with black tops or jackets. Denim is a classic, versatile fabric that can add texture and visual variety while still looking polished and cohesive. Whether it’s a mix of denim and black or a full-on monochrome palette, it all works wonderfully against the vibrant fall colors at Caughlin Ranch.
Why This Look Works for Fall Photos
Choosing black against the bright autumn backdrop creates a timeless and sophisticated look. The contrast between dark clothing and the colorful fall leaves makes everyone stand out while still allowing the beautiful natural setting to shine through. Adding denim, whether through jeans or a dress, introduces a relaxed yet stylish element, perfect for families who want a mix of classic and casual.
Consider This for Your Next Fall Session
If you’re planning a family photo session this fall, consider mixing up textures and fabrics like denim with classic black or other neutral tones. You can:
- Dress some family members in jeans, others in a jean dress or skirt.
- Combine these with black, dark gray, or even charcoal tops to keep the look sophisticated yet approachable.
- Don’t be afraid to add some color in accessories; the caramel colored socks looked great on the twins!
The key to family photos is creating a coordinated look that reflects your family's personality while complementing the season. Whether you go for all black, mix in denim, or choose a different color palette, your photos will turn out beautiful with the right combinations. The key with fall colors is not to try to compete with them. The idea here is that if we have both a colorful background and colorful clothing, the result can look too busy. If the foliage is rich in color, opt for more neutral tones.
Colorful clothing works best in fall pictures once the leaves have fallen. To break up the bare, “sleeping” nature of the landscape, it's great to add some oranges, yellows, and reds. These pops of color bring warmth and life back into the scene, creating balance and contrast without overwhelming the eye.
